It
was just last season, that big ugly ears,
weird hairdos, and androgyny accessorized our
boyish man tailored suits. How did we get here so fast? This dressing up wave that's swept the nation has made it not only
OK to wear things that match on occasion - but to look pretty to boot. I must have blinked and missed the segue. This sudden
transition is strange at best, as it's entirely necessary to reset your personality
to wear flowery flowing pieces and harder still to adjust to take
yourself seriously as you yell at a mechanic or pitch a deal.
Maybe the new feminine girl revival is really all about the quest
for something new. Not new - are any of those hundreds of
"new" companies with the name girl in the label somewhere, not to
mention bands. Spelling it out has become really tired. (Fortunately for
all of us, the
Spice Girls Suck Club is only a click
away). Flattering illustration by Aaron Meshon
Girly NYC was the very first of the girly legacy, and most attempted imitations were just that. After their long playing success with starting the baby T revolution, Pamela Atwood, Godmother of Girly, is now lending her midas touch to the lingerie market. See for yourself at Anna Sui, TG170 and NYC's Dressing Room. Other girly looks for summer revolve around pretty florals and prints and showing off your lovely gams. Those pesky sheers have sparked a whole lifestyle revolution. Layering with slips and lacy bras works just fine, with some practice and perspective adjustment. Sheer and sheer alike however, do not wear leggings with your new found sheerness. It's tempting to fall prey to a couple of hard pressed runway looks from Europe, but you've gotta trust me on this one. Under the circumstances poor Karl must've been stuck and just had no other choice. Remember how stupid it looked in '89? It still does. It was a bad blip on the screen of style making, so let's just forget all about it and move on. |
